Healthy New Year’s Resolutions and 5 Ways to make them Stick

Adopting new habits, such as eating right or moving more, especially after a prostate cancer, allows you to enhance your health.

It will also help to reverse some consequences related to prostate problems, like incontinence, benign prostatic hyperplasia, and low sperm count.

Moreover, it will allow to keep your good morale, an essential element to be healthy. Here are five tips, so your resolutions will become long-term habits.

  1. One Thing at a Time
We are naturally reluctant to changes. So, if you choose to make many at one, it is possible that you get discouraged very quickly, and that you feel like your changes are very little realistic. It is better to do it step by step: one little change at a time.
When a new habit is well assimilated, add a new one to your routine.
  1. Keep a Food Journal
Noting everything you eat might seem like a ridiculous idea to you. However, it is a good way to make better food choices and to diversify more your plate’s content. Indeed, always eating the same thing can get boring quite fast.
To find plenty of healthy and delicious ideas, you can buy a healthy cookbook or even visit the Heart & Stroke or the SOSCuisine Web sites for easy, free, and mouth-watering recipes.
  1. Exercising Should Be Fun
Running on a treadmill while looking at the wall feels like a very boring idea to you? Do something else, then! If you want to move, choose an interesting or motivating activity: dance, golf, cross-country skiing… or even simple walking with some friends or your dog.
After a prostate cancer, doing some exercise can still be difficult, especially if you have stress incontinence. Fortunately, you can strengthen your pelvic floor and prevent urinary leakages with the Kegel exercises. You will also find means to combine exercising and incontinence here.
  1. Sleeping More
Too often, we neglect our sleep’s value. It is however an essential ingredient for health. In fact, sleeping allows you to restore your energy levels, to heal after an illness like prostate cancer, and even to burn some calories. Hence, it is necessary to sleep 7 to 9 hours a night.
To sleep better, it is preferable to adopt a regular routine, for example by going to bed and waking up approximately at the same hours every day.
  1. Having Good Motivations
Finally, most of the people taking New Year’s resolution are not keeping them. To make sure your new habits pass through 2016, and even beyond, you should set yourself an objective or keep your motivations clear in mind. Whether you wish to run a half-marathon or to see your kids and grand-kids growing up, think about something positive.

You survived to prostate cancer, you can enhance your life from now on!
