A beautiful cancer? Really?

That’s what they say … “If you’re going to have cancer, might as well be prostate cancer. That’s a beautiful cancer.” Yeah… right! Here is the testimonial from André Mouton, a prostate cancer survivor, when he learned the news that we give to 12 men every day in Quebec.

My reaction to my diagnosis

When you are told at 56 that you have cancer, there is no such thing as a “beautiful cancer”; you imagine the worst. Why me? I’m not ready, etc. Once the dust settles and you are informed of your options, it’s already less worse. I am “fortunate” to have options. I chose active surveillance.

14 years later, the active surveillance cannot continue. I have to make another decision: radiation therapy or radical surgery. I still consider myself “lucky” to have had this reprieve.

Discover PROCURE: A lighthouse in the night

After researching the internet, I discovered PROCURE, which helped me make an informed decision that I was confident in. After discussion with my wife and careful consideration, we chose radiation therapy. After a few treatments, some side effects appear. We are at the end of the week and I am in pain… It worries me.

So I call PROCURE and the nurse on the phone took care of me. What a relief. She reassured me, advised me and helped me get through it. I contacted PROCURE several times and every time I called for help, this organization was there to guide and reassure me.

The Tour du Courage: Because I am courageous

In September 2020, just 6 months after my treatments, I did my first PROCURE Tour du Courage to help… help out. I reeled for a total of 638 km. I registered for the 2021 Tour again. I tripled my financial goal and set myself a challenge of 750 km in 4 weeks!

No, there is no such thing as a “beautiful cancer”. But we are lucky to have an organization like PROCURE that we can count on, where there are dedicated and professional people who are always there to help us.

Saying openly that you have prostate cancer is not easy, but when you talk about it, you feel less alone and you receive a lot of support… Talking and getting informed are the keys!

Thank you PROCURE!
